Dive deep by challenging the status quo when metrics and reality differ
Diving deep requires many of the same skills as challenging the status quo. Just as a diver must be willing to explore new depths and navigate obstacles, leaders must be willing to dive deep into data and analysis to identify underlying problems and challenges. Critical thinking and root cause problem solving are essential when leaders explain their rational and decision based on data. They must also be willing to challenge assumptions and conventional wisdom – also the own ones – , just as a diver must be willing to challenge their own fears and limitations.
Additionally, both divers and leaders must be persistent in their efforts to reach new depths and achieve their goals, even when faced with obstacles or setbacks. Leaders stay calm, even when faced with difficult situations, and motivate their team members to find together appropriate solutions or new ways to achieve their goals.
